The wetlands of the Poitou and the Vendee

The Poitevin wetlands are famous for their unique landscape and history. Its outstanding and plentiful natural surroundings. Its countryside has been the subject of many dramatic upheavals through the ages. Since the 19th century, ash trees and poplars have been planted to support the embankments and pastures and market gardening have replaced the reed beds, creating this water colour scenery. The reputation of the Poitevin wetlands is down to its vast network of over 90,000 hectares of canals and nature. Trees and water living together in perfect harmony bringing this picture to life, the "Green Venice" awaits all those who are particularly devoted to nature. The Poitevin Wetlands can be split up into 3 clearly defined zones. This division means that the water can be properly managed throughout the year: the coastal zone, the dried wetlands (the largest area that is mainly devoted to agriculture) and the wet marshlands also known by the more evocative name of the "Green Venice", because it gets submerged during the winter floods. Hidden within the contours of Green Venice is a very large fishing area. Keen anglers and nature-lovers will find the answers to their needs thanks to the "Vacances Pêche Vendée" (Vendee Fishing Holidays) label. Amateurs and professionals alike become attached to the enchanting beauty of this land with its wide variety of fish and the sheer quantity of water courses and lakes. The Poitevin Wetlands also have a view overlooking the sea. On the coastline, l’Aiguillon sur Mer, la Faute sur Mer and la Tranche sur Mer get more sunshine than any other place on the Atlantic shoreline.
